This comes from the distant past, or at least it seems very distant now! This is one of the two good things to come out of the year I spent at college.
A poem of all things! I used to hate poetry at school and I think I still probably do dislike it. To me it always seemed very pretentious and hard to understand. So I guess this is me being pretentious! I still think that this is a very ‘atmospheric’ bit of writing. The idea came to me while I was trying to sleep one night (I think) and the whole thing was written on that night. If I recall correctly I edited a bit the next day and then it when on to get me an A- in class.
Not bad, but a few weeks later I dropped the English class! Anyway here it is
Gloom
Gloom and depression
their spores lurk in dark places
hiding in cracks and crevasses
hiding, watching, waiting
they wait for ill luck or evil to strike.
The spores strike
feeding off the ill luck of evil
feeding, growing, multiplying, spreading
the spores spread to others and bring gloom to them
the spores leave a trail of unhappiness in there wake
the spores spread
spreading, searching, attacking.
The spores spread until they meet with their arch enemies
joy and happiness
The battle commences
the foes locked in combat
struggling, fighting, wounding
joy wins
the battle is won, but the war is not.
Joy beats back the tide of gloom
bringing happiness and relief to all infected with gloom
but gloom sows more spores
the spores hide in dark places
hiding, watching, waiting
waiting to strike again.
